Hello! Who are you and what remote business did you start?
Hi! I’m Suzann Kaltbaum, and I started Suzann Kaltbaum Art. I’m a digital artist who creates unique, limited-edition artwork by manipulating photos I’ve taken from my travels. My work is printed on HD metal, which gives it a modern, vibrant look. It’s all custom-sized for collectors who want something personal and one-of-a-kind.
My company solves the problem of finding artwork that fits perfectly into a space and matches personal style. With custom sizing and the ability to adjust colors and other details, I offer collectors something uniquely tailored to their preferences. It’s more than just purchasing art—it’s about getting a piece that’s made specifically for them and their home. In this article, I’ve included some pieces from my Travel Around the World collection, showing iconic places but from a different angle. They aren’t the typical views you see everywhere. Whether it’s a unique shot of the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, or a view of the Trevi Fountain, each one stands out in its own way. That’s what my collectors love about my art—it takes familiar places and gives them a fresh, new perspective that sparks curiosity and makes them feel special.
What’s your personal history and the inspiration for your business?
I’ve always loved photography and travel. My journey into art began with a personal project a family portrait I made
When my youngest was getting ready to leave for college, I wanted to create a picture that showed our family in a fun way and highlighted the real kings of the castle, our fur babies Cosmo and Winston.
Every element in this portrait was added with care, and it’s all an illusion. The walls were originally blank, and I added everything you see piece by piece.
After creating this, my love for photo manipulation was born.
- I digitally placed the frame on the wall and created a shadow to add depth.
- The family portrait was then carefully added to the frame
- The dog’s positions were adjusted since they weren’t both facing the camera.
- Bright red leashes used to hold the dogs in place, were removed along with my son.
- I made sure the cigar was unlit, adding the red tip, smoke, and liquid in the glass (after all, Winston couldn’t be trusted with a lit cigar!).
This artwork isn’t just something pretty to hang over the couch. It’s a reflection of who we are, and it makes me smile.
I wanted to create something that truly captured the personality of our family and showed who were the real kings of the castle. That experience sparked my love for digital art, and it has only grown since then. Now, I get to combine my passion for travel with my creativity, and it’s been such a fulfilling journey.
Describe the process of launching your remote business.
I started solo, and it’s still just me! I began by sharing my art with family and friends, and their encouragement pushed me to take it seriously. I launched my website, started offering custom sizes, and slowly built up a following. Since it’s all digital, I can run the business from anywhere, which is perfect for me because I travel a lot.
What has worked to attract customers and earn their loyalty?
I think the personal connection I build with collectors is key. They’re not just buying a piece of art; they’re buying a story, a memory. My custom sizing, along with the ability to adjust colors and other details, helps because people know they’re getting something uniquely tailored to their preferences. It’s more than just buying a piece of art; it’s about having something made specifically for them and their space. Word of mouth and Instagram have been great for me, too. I always make sure to offer free shipping and throw in bonuses like note cards from my travel collection.
Knowing what you know now, are there things you would have done differently when first starting out?
I would have focused on building my email list sooner! It’s such a powerful way to stay connected with collectors and offer them special perks.
What has been the best part of starting a remote business?
The freedom to work from anywhere! I just had a pop-up art show in New York, and now I’m staying here with my grandbaby instead of heading back to Florida. I love that flexibility.
What platform/tools do you use for your business?
I use Wix for my website, and I do most of my marketing through Instagram and email.
What have been the most influential books, networking groups, podcasts, or other resources you’ve found?
I love reading books on personal growth—anything that uplifts and motivates me. Networking with other artists and entrepreneurs online has also been valuable.
Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to build a remote business of their dreams?
Start small, but dream big. Be patient, and don’t be afraid to try new things or pivot when something isn’t working. And most importantly, build genuine connections with your customers—they’re the heart of your business.
Are there any positions or internships you’re hiring for right now?
Not at the moment, but I always love connecting with other creatives!
